Residency and Fellowships / Program Structure
The residency program at UCLA accepts 3 trainees per year to participate in a 7-year curriculum
This includes one year of general internship under the auspices of the General Surgery Division. The following six years are spent performing both clinical and academic responsibilities under the Department of Neurosurgery.

An overview of the program is as follows:
- Year 1: 6 months of general surgery, 2 months of neurosurgery, 3 months of neurology
- Year 2: 12 months of neurosurgery at Westwood campus
- Year 3: 2 months of neuropathology, 2 months of neuroradiology, 2 months of endovascular, 3 months of functional/stereotactic surgery and radiosurgery, 3 months of neurology
- Years 4-5: 8 months as UCLA senior, 4 months as spine senior (Santa Monica), 4 months as Harbor senior and additional research/elective time (flexible)
- Research Year: 12 months of research
- Year 6: 4 months as UCLA chief, 4 months as VA chief, 4 months as Harbor chief
- Totals: 10 months of general surgery, 47 months of clinical neurosurgery, 7 months clinical neuroscience, 20 months of research/elective time
