Residency and Fellowships
Our Residency and Fellowships
The UCLA Neurosurgery Residency program is a rigorous clinical and academic training curriculum designed to produce the academic neurosurgeon of the future.
A well-founded subspecialty organization within the Department has provided excellent training for the residents in all aspects of Neurosurgery:
Neurovascular | Benign and Malignant Brain Tumors | Skull Base Surgery | Epilepsy, Spine (including spinal instrumentation) | Pediatrics | Stereotactic Radiosurgery | Neuroendoscopy | Trauma | Pain | Peripheral Nerve.
During the time spent at UCLA and its affiliate hospitals, the residents have ample opportunity to master all facets of operative neurosurgery. Residents rotate through three main hospitals: UCLA Medical Center / Center for Health Sciences (CHS) (the university hospital), the West Los Angeles VA Medical Center, Santa Monica - UCLA Hospital (comprehensive spine center), and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (second largest LA county hospital, world-renown in emergency and trauma care).
The research initiative both within the Department of Neurosurgery and within the UCLA system is unparalleled. Neurosurgery faculty members at UCLA consist of some of the top investigators in the country in neuro-oncology, neurotrauma, functional neurosurgery, adult and pediatric epilepsy, and adult hydrocephalus. Our spine surgeons, performing complex and minimally invasive spine surgery, are on the leading edge of biomedical technology and are frequently lecturing around the world. We strive to make our residency program a versatile educational experience that leaves our graduates with both the desire and ability to be the foremost neurosurgeons of our discipline.
There are ample opportunities for both clinical and basic research both within the Department and in collaboration with other labs or departments at UCLA. Applicants are expected to have a strong academic record with a strong interest in commitment to Neurosurgery. Three candidates are selected for the program each year. Invitations to interview for these positions are based on the candidate's academic record, National Board scores, publications, letters of recommendation, and a personal statement.
